Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure that removes excess fat, tissue and skin from disproportionately large breasts. Because the burden of excess breast tissue can be hard on a woman both physically and emotionally, this procedure offers a medical way to enhance physical proportions and minimize the discomforts she may have been experiencing. Breast reduction works best for nonsmoking women who are physically healthy but deal with back, neck and/or shoulder pain from heavy breasts, face shoulder indentations from bra straps and/or have experienced skin irritations beneath their breast creases. The procedure can be effective at restoring normal proportions to a woman’s body and increasing her overall self-confidence in the process.

Dr. Potyondy also treats enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia).

What the Breast Reduction Procedure Involves

Once Dr. Potyondy has deemed a woman a good candidate for surgery, the patient will undergo a four-step procedure that can reduce her breasts’ size. Here is how it works:
  1. Undergoing Anesthesia: To ensure the patient’s comfort during surgery, either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia will be used.
  2. Receiving an Incision: Dr. Potyondywill make either a keyhole or inverted T incision at the breast, in order to remove some of its volume.
  3. Having Tissues Removed: Dr. Potyondy will reposition the nipple, reduce the areola diameter and remove breast tissues as necessary. In rare cases, the nipple and the areola will be removed and repositioned.
  4. Getting Incision Site Closed: Sutures layered deep within breast tissues support newly shaped breasts, with sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape placed over the closed skin.
After surgery, the patient will notice some incision lines, most of which will significantly fade with time; any lingering scars are usually concealable beneath a swimsuit or bra. Following the physician’s instructions for recovery and care is crucial in order to speed up the healing process.

Results to Expect from Breast Reduction Surgery

While there are no guarantees from breast reduction surgery, most women experience an improved appearance right away. As swelling and incision lines fade, a patient’s satisfaction typically only increases over time. With a healthy lifestyle and stable weight, an individual can enjoy a more desirable breast size permanently
